Abstract
Objective : To assess posturographic parameters and fall risk in patients with osteoporosis.

Materials and Methods: Forty-four female patients (mean age: 71.1¡¾6.13) with osteoporosis were studied. They were divided into high and low fall risk by falls risk assessment rehabilitation and assessment unit POWCH (Priciple of Wales Community Hospital). Posturographic parameters were evaluated by using the Interactive Balance System (Tetrax?, Ramat Gan, Israel). Posturographic parameters were obtained after patients standing on the firm plate and pillow with eyes opened or closed. The Berg balance test was performed to all patients. The difference of posturographic parameters between two groups were analyzed by Mann-Whitney ?- test (p-value£¼0.05 means significant difference) using SPSS version 15.0.

Results: Forty - four subjects with osteoporosis were studied. Twenty-six patients (59%) were in high risk group (group I) and eighteen patients (41%) were in low risk group (group II). General stability parameters (which mean the amount of sway over the four plates and are indicator of the subject¡¯s overall steadiness) were higher in group I in all conditions. Fourier transformation intensity of sway showed that group I had poor balance, probably caused by musculoskeletal weakness. The Berg balance scale was higher in group I than group II.

Conclusion: The Interactive Balance system could be more convenient and precise tool to evaluate fall risk in the patients with osteoporosis by evaluating the problems of balance.
